Man manipulating Earth

With revelations over the last several years about the role the CIA has played interfering in U.S. politics, it seems fair to ask: Does the CIA run America?

In 2016, then CIA Director John Brennan helped organize a campaign to smear the Republican candidate for President as a Russian spy. Much of that operation was run out of London, where future CIA Director Gina Haspel was station chief. And weeks before the 2020 election, several former CIA directors were among the more than 40 former agency employees who signed a letter dismissing reports of Hunter Biden’s laptop as Russian “disinformation.”

And recently, we were given a clearer picture of why Ukraine and Russia keep showing up in deep state operations. Sure, the CIA is defending its political allies, like the Bidens, but by targeting Trump and other America First figures, it’s primarily protecting its own equities.

An article published this week gave a look at the CIA’s secret relationship with Ukraine, including the U.S. clandestine service’s role in the Ukraine-Russia war. What this latest article on the CIA-Ukraine relationship shows is that U.S. intelligence services have become a government unto themselves — unaccountable to the American people and their elected representatives.

Did you know that the CIA has built 12 spy installations on Ukraine’s border with Russia? Or what about the fact that U.S. spy services provide Kyiv with intelligence for targeted missile strikes, track Russian troop movements, and help support Ukrainian spy networks? In short, the CIA is waging war on Russia. Whether it serves the U.S. national interest to be waging a secret war against a foreign power with a formidable nuclear arsenal is a question left unanswered.

The lead writer on the article is Adam Entous, a media operative who appears to be favored by U.S. spy services to message on their behalf. During the Russiagate scandal, Entous’ name was on scores of articles based on leaks of classified information. None of them of course came from whistleblowers calling out government corruption and fraud. Rather, these selectively crafted leaks were designed to prosecute a political operation targeting the sitting President and his aides.

For instance, Entous was an author of a story sourced to an illegally leaked transcript of a phone call between General Mike Flynn, now chair of America’s Future, and the Russian ambassador to Washington, Sergei Kislyak. That article contributed to the CIA’s effort to push General Flynn out of the White House and advance the plot against Trump.

Of course, it’s not great for the Ukrainian people either, at war with a much more powerful state thanks in part to the incompetence and corruption of their own leadership, supported by U.S. government bureaucracies that left a record of failure in foreign wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. And naturally all of it is funded by all of us, the American taxpayer.

It’s enough to make you throw up your hands in despair — but we won’t. We can’t. Remember that in the last major war America won, it didn’t get easier after our troops landed on the beaches of Normandy. Before a conclusive WWII victory, our soldiers fought through the dense woods of France and endured a winter of hell during the Battle of the Bulge. It’s hard right now for us, and the woods are going to get denser. And the deep state counter-movements will become fiercer, especially as they come to recognize they’re in retreat.

This is our fight for freedom at home. It’s our fight for the Republic. We were born for this time.

Please participate in our Reader’s Survey. Your insights and thoughts are important as we learn what is on the minds and in the hearts of our fellow Americans. We read them all and share some of them Mondays at 9 a.m. during America’s Future live broadcasts with our Executive Director Mary O’Neill on America’s Mondays With Mary. Thank You!

David Azerrad is an Assistant Professor at Hillsdale College’s Van Andel Graduate School of Government in Washington, D.C. His research and writing focuses on classical liberalism, conservative political thought and identity politics. He’s just published a new article stirring plenty of controversy in conservative circles, “Revitalizing the Right,” that calls for “bold men who will be spurred by the appropriate outrage at what has been taken from them and disgust at what the country has become to defund, humiliate, and marginalize the centers of power of the Left while building their own or reconquering lost ones.”

We spoke with David recently to get his insights on American politics past and present — and future.

What is the best book ever written about America?

Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America. Without a doubt. As Harvey Mansfield says in the introduction to his translation, it’s not just the best book ever written about America, but also the best book ever written about democracy. It never ceases to amaze my students how a 29-year-old Frenchman who had spent less than a year in America could write a book that not only gets us but that has proven to be so prescient. You’ll see more deeply into America by reading this almost 200-year-old book than you will by reading pretty much any work of American political science.

You’re originally from Canada but have lived and worked in the US for almost 20 years so you know as well as anyone else, what do foreigners typically get wrong about America?

How much time do you have? Because of the towering influence of America and, in particular, American culture, everyone thinks they know us. In truth what most know is America as it is depicted on American television or as they see it when they spend a week in New York City. And I don’t need to tell you how the elite, urban, coastal Americans who write and produce the shows and movies that the whole planet watches not only misunderstand the rest of the country, but in fact don’t like it. To quote a former President, they see a bunch of people who “cling to their guns and religion.” That comment reveals the two aspects of American life that elites and foreigners most dislike and really can’t wrap their minds around: the Second Amendment and Christianity. I’ve found it very, very hard to try to get them to see the virtue in having an armed and pious citizenry.

What parts of U.S. history are your students at Hillsdale most interested in?

When they arrive they tend to be most interested in the Founding and the Civil War, as I think is the case with most students who lean to the right. In the classes I teach on American Progressivism and Liberalism and Contemporary American Political Thought, I try to get them interested in the successive waves of progressivism, liberalism and leftism that fundamentally transformed America over the course of the 20th century—in particular the cultural revolution of the 1960s—and also to try to understand the post-Cold War era we live in and the nature of the contemporary American regime. It’s quite the intellectual challenge to make sense of the mess we are in today since the situation is unfolding and, in many crucial regards, without any historical precedent.

Is the biggest problem facing America right now political or cultural, or something else entirely?

I think the deepest problem is psychological, by which I don’t mean some disorder to be cured by seeing a therapist or taking medication. By psychological, I mean the rot in the mind of the ruling class. On the Left, it’s this conviction that America, the West and white people are the root of all evil and that women, people of color—African-Americans above all others—and other purportedly victimized groups are objects of collective worship. Hence the indifference to black crime, the pathologization of all healthy expressions of masculinity, the celebration of sexual degeneracy, and the jubilation before the flood of immigrants streaming across our border. Members of the ruling class who are on the right may disagree, but they rarely have the courage to forcefully denounce the lies and unabashedly defend what is left of the American way of life.

What is your prayer for America?

“Meet them undaunted, and they shall have no power to daunt thee” (Jeremiah 1:17).

A Call For Truth To Keep The Torch Of Freedom Bright
Lara Logan Testifying

The indomitable Lara Logan calls it as she sees it. She does not mince words, and she bows to no one. She has no agenda. The truth is her guide.

On Monday, February 26, 2024, this award-winning investigative journalist demonstrated the grit and fortitude of a warrior during her testimony on the destructive use of censorship and propaganda by the administrative state and their willing allies in the media at a roundtable discussion held by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) on “Federal Health Agencies and the COVID Cartel: What Are They Hiding?”

Shedding light on the damage to freedom when free speech is lost, and journalists surrender their duty to the public,” Lara laid bare the truth. “These are the worst of times for the media in America. We live in the age of information warfare, where propaganda is not simply a weapon; it is the entire field of battle. This is a war for our minds aided by advanced technology, and we have never been here in all of human history.”

Lara is among the world’s most acclaimed journalists, and her voice in the fight for freedom and truth in America is vital to hear. Her remarks during the roundtable are trustworthy and can be heard by clicking here.

Lara’s credentials are impeccable. She has been a journalist since she was 17 years old and has earned her professional leadership over decades, working at the highest levels of the American media as a full-time correspondent at 60 Minutes and the Chief Foreign Correspondent and Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent at CBS News for sixteen years of her career. She is the recipient of numerous journalistic and reporting awards, including the highly prestigious DuPont-Columbia University Silver Baton, the Overseas Press Club, the Emmys, and the RTNDA/Edward R. Murrow Award.

“As a journalist, I have sat down with world leaders, mass murderers, and terrorists,” she said. “And I have held people on both sides of the aisle accountable. I have seen suffering and death and walked through the fires of hell on distant battlefields and faced my own death at the hands of a mob of 200 men in Egypt when I was gang-raped and sodomized and beaten while on assignment for 60 Minutes.”

“It is not by chance that the Founding Fathers put freedom of speech first,” she said in ending her remarks, in which she called on journalists to return to the foundations of their profession and stand united for truth in their reporting to the public. “It was by design. They knew that without it, none of the rights that came after could be guaranteed.” And to patriotic Americans who cherish freedom and free speech, she calls them to action as well. “We are once again watching the lights of freedom go out here and around the world. It is up to us to determine if they will be lit again – ever.”

America’s Future Files Two Amicus Briefs Supporting States’ Rights

Gavel

Over the past week, America’s Future filed two separate Amicus briefs supporting states’ rights under the Tenth Amendment along with the constitutional rights of all Americans. The following provides background information and details of both briefs

In Support of Gov. Abbott and States’ Rights

On Friday, February 23, 2024, America’s Future submitted a Motion for Leave to File a Supplemental Amicus brief to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in in United States of America v Greg Abbott, in his official capacity as Governor of Texas et al., No. 23-50632, one of the ongoing legal battles between Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the Biden Administration.   On February 27, 2024 the Fifth Circuit en banc panel granted our Motion and our Amicus was filed by the court, as submitted. America’s Future supports Governor Abbott’s comprehensive and successful response to the Biden Administration’s abdication of power to secure our southern border against the ongoing invasion of illegal aliens into our homeland.  The Biden Administration is working against the interests of America and the safety of Americans insomuch as it has all but abandoned the rule of law covering illegal immigration.

Article 4, Section 4 of the Constitution states,

The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.

And, as explained in our brief,

In 2021, Texas Governor Greg Abbott responded to the massive invasion of illegal immigration across Texas’s border with Mexico by launching multiple defensive strategies termed ‘Operation Lone Star.’ He invoked the Invasion Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which states in pertinent part:

No State shall, without the Consent of Congress … engage in War, unless actually invaded, or in such imminent Danger as will not admit of delay. [Art. I, Sec. 10, cl.3.]

Each state enjoys inherent power to defend its own borders against invasion.  It is both remarkable and absurd that the Biden Administration continues to sue Texas, wasting federal and state taxpayer money and resources, in an effort to prevent Texas from protecting itself (and all Americans for that matter) against the flood of illegal aliens, cartels, sex traffickers, and violent criminals when, instead, the administration should be thanking Governor Abbott for doing the job of the federal government.

Not only do the states enjoy the inherent right to defend its borders, but in 1925, the Supreme Court acknowledged that a primary and essential right of each state is self-preservation. Furthermore, an informed judiciary need only look to the Constitution and the published papers of American leaders during Her infancy to be certain Texas is resoundingly within its rights.

Our brief provides the Fifth Circuit with historical insight, including an ample war chest of facts and text illustrating just that.  For instance, as reminders, our brief brings to light the words of Patrick Henry along with the importance of Federalist No. 43 in Texas’ battle to save our nation from itself, citing,

In Federalist No. 43, Madison explained:

A protection against invasion, is due from every society, to the parts composing it. The latitude of the expression here used, seems to secure each state not only against foreign hostility, but against ambitious or vindictive enterprises of its more powerful neighbours.

In the Virginia ratifying convention, Patrick Henry did not mince words:

If you give this clause a fair construction, what is the true meaning of it? What does this relate to? Not domestic insurrections, but war. If the country be invaded, a state may go to war….

Not only is our brief robust with persuasive historical reasoning in support of Governor Abbott and states’ rights, but it also provides a survey of case law bolstering Abbott’s case for protecting the jurisdiction he leads and, by extension, all of us.  Case law dating back to 1793 all the way through last year (2023) is incorporated, cited, and quoted throughout the brief, bringing to the forefront common law reasoning and precedence favoring Governor Abbott and “Operation Lone Star.”

Our brief offers extensive well-reasoned grounds for the Fifth Circuit to rule in favor of Governor Abbott, the state of Texas, and in the interests of our sovereignty and security of America her citizens. For these reason and others, we urge the Fifth Circuit to reverse the injunctive relief issued by the district court, issuing an order favorable to Governor Abbott.

In Support of States’ Rights to Regulate Abortion under Dobbs (2022)

On Tuesday, February 27, 2024, America’s Future filed an Amicus brief to the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) in Mike Moyle, Speaker of the Idaho House of Representatives, et al. v United States, Dkt No. 23-726.  The SCOTUS public docket in this case is located here.  The SCOTUS has granted Idaho’s petition for certiorari and has scheduled oral argument in this case for Wednesday, April 24, 2024.  It will be live streamed and recorded.  Access to the live stream and recording is located here, and later located in the SCOTUS’s audio archives which is located here.

The question in the case to be resolved by SCOTUS is:

Whether EMTALA [the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act of 1986, 42 U.S.C. § 1395dd] preempts state laws that protect human life and prohibit abortions, like Idaho’s “Defense of Life Act”.

For background, the original plaintiff in this case is the United States Justice Department (DOJ). Once again, Americans are burdened with a brazen federal government trying to tie the hands of a state legislature.  And, yet again, the Biden administration plays word games in an attempt to import its demonic ideology onto Americans and usurp states’ rights as conferred to the states by the Constitution.  The Tenth Amendment of our Constitution plainly recognizes,

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Here, in contravene of the Constitution and contrary to the June 24, 2022 SCOTUS decision in Dobbs which overturned Roe v Wade (1973) thereby returning the right to regulate abortions back to the states and its residents, the Biden Administration’s DOJ employed taxpayer money and resources to challenge the constitutionality of Idaho’s state law entitled Defense of Life Act.  This state law was duly passed by the Idaho elected members of the Idaho legislature, and properly signed into law by Idaho’s Governor Brad Little.

Idaho’s Defense of Life Act proscribes abortion except in the cases of rape, incest, or threat to the life of the mother.  It was scheduled to take effect on August 25, 2022 (30 days following the Dobbs decision), however, on August 2, 2022, the DOJ filed suit, seeking injunctive relief to enjoin Idaho from implementing and enforcing the law, arguing EMTALA preempts state law and requires abortions to be performed under circumstances far beyond the scope of Idaho’s duly enacted Defense of Life Act.

As detailed in our brief, the DOJ’s argument undermines the SCOTUS, manipulates the meaning of words to gain leverage against residents of the states, and rejects the idea that Americans can decide for themselves which platforms of elected official best advances their interests when they vote in elections.  To clarify, subsequent to Dobbs, the DOJ surreptitiously took a  corrupt and wayward approach to interpreting a federal law that has been “on the books” for nearly 40 years.  As explained in our brief,

[The DOJ’s] theory [is] that the [Idaho Defense of Life Act] violated a July 11, 2022, post-Dobbs interpretation [by the Biden administration’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)] of [] EMTALA is commonly referred to by the practice it was enacted to prevent — the Patient Anti-Dumping Act. The district court granted an injunction against the Act on August 24, 2022, the day before the Idaho law was to take effect.

The brief posits that the DOJ’s theory is deficient on its face and fatally flawed primarily based on the following four reasons, each of which is fully set forth in the “Argument” section of our brief:

HHS had no statutory authority to issue the HHS guidance documents…EMTALA never required abortions to be performed…the lower courts’ injunction against Idaho law undermines the SCOTUS decision in Dobbs…[and] HHS’s guidance documents constitute an unconstitutional exercise of a federal police power…[and] the Founders intended dual sovereignties (by and between the 50 states’ governments and the one national, i.e. federal, government) to preserve liberty.

America’s Future urges the SCOTUS to reverse the preliminary injunction in this case and uphold Idaho’s Defense of Life Act as a valid exercise of states’ rights.

Tools Of Tyrants
Manipulating Language

This is the eleventh entry in our In Focus series identifying and exposing the tools that modern-day tyrants are using to thwart the will of We The People for power and control. To access previous articles, please click here.

During the last administration, President Trump and his staff often referred to those foreigners who were illegally in the country as “illegal aliens.”  Makes sense.  That’s not a pejorative — just a fact.  But that term “illegal aliens” highlights the fact that these people are not Americans — they are citizens of another country.  And it makes us realize they are in our country — well, illegally.  And, if foreigners are in the country illegally, that leads us to the conclusion that our government is doing a bad job in enforcing our laws to prevent these citizens of other countries from entering, and if they are found here, they should be expelled.  All those views are politically incorrect.  We cannot have such thinking.

Within weeks of when President Biden came into office, memos were issued to department heads at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) and Customs and Border Protection (“CBP”) ordering they change their tune.  They were ordered to stop using terms like “illegal alien” and to begin using softer, gentler language designed to reflect a more “humane” view of immigration.  Here were some of the word changes that were designed to confer “dignity to those in our custody”:

Trump Words
alien
illegal
assimilation

becomes
becomes
becomes

Biden Words
noncitizen; migrant
undocumented
integration

Trump Words
alien
illegal
assimilation

becomes

Biden Words
noncitizen; migrant
undocumented
integration

If these same “illegal aliens” are now described as “undocumented persons,” it makes us think that maybe these people just forgot their papers, and maybe we should just provide these people some documents.  And, if they are just “noncitizens,” maybe we should just make them citizens.

This change in language occurs throughout government.  When the pharmaceutical industry was trying to convince us to take their COVID-19 mRNA shots, they knew they had to market them in a way that seemed familiar.  They decided not to refer to these shots as “experimental gene therapy,” but rather as “vaccines.”  Even the Merriam-Webster Dictionarywas altered by powerful forces to change the online definition of the word “vaccine.”  Before the mRNA shots came along, vaccines were made from dead or weakened pathogens to trigger an immunological response in the body to make us better able to fight off the pathogen in the future.  That is nothing like what the mRNA shots do.  But would you rather take a “vaccine” or participate in “experimental gene therapy”?  The simple solution was to change the definition of the word “vaccine” to change the way you think.

This type of language control was predicted in George Orwell’s 1984, who described how a totalitarian stake would alter the language to fit their political agenda.  One of the bureaucrats in the nation of Oceania described the importance of controlling the language:

Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought?  In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.  Every concept that can ever be needed will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined….  [Emphasis added.]

Orwell provides a great description of the world they are fashioning:  “when the concept of freedom has been abolished … [t]he whole climate of thought will be different.  In fact, there will be no thought, as we understand it now.  Orthodoxy means not thinking — not needing to think.  Orthodoxy is unconsciousness.”  (Emphasis added.)

The connection between thought and words is quite obvious.  When we think about complex matters, we think using words.  Manipulation of language is one of the most effective ways to manipulate our thinking.  The Left knows this and is committed to the use of language to control.

We are routinely told to avoid language that could be viewed as “offensive” or “threatening” to others.  To protect the sensitivities of others, we must speak in a politically correct way.  As one writer puts it:

Political correctness is language control.  And language control is thought control.  Period.  The rise of modern political correctness (PC) is a great example of the cunning way in which social engineers … operate.  Political correctness is soft censorship.  It is intolerance disguised as tolerance.

The “Culture-Control Left,” as one British author calls them, are masters of controlling debate by controlling the definitions of words.  Consider just a few.  “Gay.”  “Pro-choice.”  “Homophobic.”  “Assault weapon.”  “Antiracist.”  “Gender-affirming care.”  Who wants to be “anti-choice”?  Who wants to be “homophobic”?  Who wants to be a racist?  Who wants “assault weapons proliferating in our streets causing death and destruction?”  Who doesn’t want to “affirm” and to “care?”  When your agenda is unpopular, you rename it — and you pejoratively rename those who disagree.

The Culture Control Left are also masters of changing definitions when necessary.  One writer notes the Left’s substitution of “climate change” for “global warming” when the weather refused to cooperate with the narrative:

the phrase “Global Warming” … was replaced almost overnight with ‘Climate Change,’ mostly because we had had several winters where it was, unsurprisingly, cold.  Rather than rock their narrative, the Left merely rebranded Global Warming.  It was certainly easier than admitting they were wrong….  Naturally, this twist of our language was reinforced by the mainstream media, which quickly adopts the phrase du jour and adds it to its liberal lexicon.

As Benjamin Dierker writes in The Federalist:  “Through linguistic activism, leftists have begun a full-scale war on language, playing by their own set of constantly shifting rules…. [T]he modern American lexicon is changing faster than society can keep up.”

Once definition is controlled, once language itself is controlled, language then becomes a means of control.  “‘Hate speech’ is the key concept that the CCL deploys to justify ‘cancelling’ adherents to positions judged to be transgressive, and to impose greater state regulation of peaceful expression,” writes British author March Glendening.  “The ill-defined nature of what constitutes hate speech represents a serious threat to our capacity to engage in open, democratic debate.  The [Culture Control Left] should be recognised as a force for a primitive, pre-Enlightenment style of politics which seeks to use state power to severely curtail the parameters of debate.”

If we wanted to, how could we fight back?  We could begin by resisting the impulse to use the lexicon of the Left, which causes us to lose the battle before it begins.  Is there really anything wrong with referring to a homosexual as a homosexual, rather than the “gay?”  Why would we call an “unborn baby” a “fetus?”  If we are discussing a man wearing a dress who “thinks” he is a woman, do we really need to refer to him as “her”?  Are we required to participate in that person’s delusion out of politeness?  “[T]aking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.”  Ephesians 6:16.

Now, if you are an employee and could be fired for “misgendering” a coworker, that presents a different issue.  We are told in Matthew 27:16 “count the cost” before you go to battle, and not every fight needs to be fought.  But when we can resist, we should resist.  We did not start this, but the battle with the counter-culture is on, and there is more honor in being defeated than in capitulating.
