The Character Of America Fortified By The Power Of Resilience
Lt. General Michael T. Flynn, USA (Ret.), Chair of America’s Future
There’s a human quality that deserves our attention – resilience. It’s at the core of good character and is central to our inner strength to pick ourselves up when faced with adversity, get back in the battle, and refuse to quit.
Think of an old oak tree.
Ten miles west of Charleston, South Carolina is where you’ll find Angel Oak – a huge southern oak tree more than 500-years-old. Some even say she is as old as 1500 years. Imagine all she’s weathered over all those years. Yet still she stands — resilient and strong at 66-feet tall, 28- feet in circumference.
That’s the American character — time-tested and tried like that old Angel Oak rooted in the richness of the soil of our nation’s land, still standing sturdy, stout and steadfast in all her glory. That’s resilience and it resides at the core of our American character. I see it in my travels around our great country.
The truth is that we Americans thrive under hardship. If one way is closed off to us, we find another. We’re willing to take the harder right when duty to God and country calls us to the fight. That’s what sent our forefathers across the ocean and our ancestors West where they discovered new opportunities and created new lives for themselves and their families.
The American people are fed up with the garbage thrown their way. Washington, D.C. is a morass of incompetence and corruption. We’ve got problems on the home front and our enemies abroad look at us and see weakness. I don’t need to tell you everything that’s going wrong. Patriotic Americans know the list. It grows daily, stretching wider and deeper, intent on destroying our country and tearing us apart.
Be rest assured. What I’ve seen in my travels is unmistakable — no one out there in our great country is throwing in the towel. No one is giving up. We’re resilient. That great fortitude that sent our forefathers across the ocean to build this new land lives on. The pioneer grit that inspired a generation of new Americans to brave all sort of dangers and settle the Great Plains survives. That same determined spirit lives in us and inspires us, too.
Embrace it with courage and the power of resilience. Our country’s been through even harder times than these. We’re going to survive whatever storms come our way.
On this Fourth of July, remember our nation’s anthem – a tribute to our national resilience – commemorating the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812:
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
In spite of tremendous dangers, our ancestors prevailed. We learned from them and those who came after how to stand firmly grounded like the ancient Angel Oak, growing stronger every day.
Destiny Calls All Americans To Get Involved
“What am I going to do to help my country, to help my family, to help my community?” is the question asked to all Americans in a just released video with General Michael Flynn. General Flynn is Board Chair of America’s Future and the powerhouse force in America’s fight for freedom and the preservation of our Constitutional Republic and God-given rights as citizens of this great nation.
“Destiny calls us to act with courage and accountability to pass the torch of freedom to our children and grandchildren or lose it all,” he writes in an accompanied essay. “There is no other way. The destiny of America will be decided once again, not along the path you walked upon yesterday, but which path you choose to walk on tomorrow.”
America’s Future urges all Americans to get involved and never quit the fight for freedom. Please watch the video and heed General Flynn’s message.
