At America’s Future, we celebrate the fact that the United States was founded by men and women whose vision for our great country was informed by their faith. Last week, we started a new series to explore the many kinds of faith that drive our nation forward.
We looked at the faith expressed in the Declaration of Independence, that God has granted us certain unalienable rights, chiefly the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And this week we explore faith in family, the enduring strength of our nation.
The American family is the source of our country’s greatest virtues and values like independence and teamwork, self-reliance and generosity, courage and modesty. What keeps the family strong is faith —faith in God, faith in America, and faith in the family itself and all its members.
If you’ve read the accounts of our American forefathers, it’s hard not to be struck by their resilience and fortitude. From the pilgrims who first settled the new world to the pioneers who went west, there was little to support them in their quest for a better life. There was no government to help them clear the land and build their homes or safeguard them from outlaws and hostile native tribes. How did they manage to steel their nerves and build a country despite such perils?
They put their faith first of all in God, who guided and protected them. And they put their faith in each other, family — fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers, uncles and aunts, and other members of their extended families. They understood if any one of them shirked their responsibility, it could cost the entire family everything. Some had more responsibilities than others, but all were responsible for each other — their lives depended on it.
The lessons learned from our forefathers and throughout our nation’s history are that when our families join together to form communities, the combination creates the fabric and foundation of our great country – one large and powerful American family. And thus, our faith in our own family, coupled with our faith in the American community of families is truly the ultimate source of America’s enduring strength that’s binds us to the past and to the future of our nation.
No greater contribution can be made to our nation’s future than the American community of families speaking out together in defense of faith, liberty, and American exceptionalism. Take this week’s Reader’s Survey and tell us what you think. Thank you to the thousands of readers who share their insights and thoughts with us.
The U.S. Constitution is remarkable. It is a single document, comprised of seven Articles, the Bill of Rights – first 10 amendments – and 17 other amendments, that has stood the test of time for nearly 250 years. Configured into the structure of the Constitution is the concept of a limited federal government vested with powers intended to protect our territorial integrity and ensure our civil rights are preserved. Significantly, the document further lays out our multifaceted federal system of three branches of government, functioning independently but related to one another through the policies and principles of checks and balances.
The three branches of our Constitutional “family tree” are: (1) the Executive branch; (2) the Legislative branch; and (3) the Judicial branch. Success of each branch depends almost entirely on the ability of its agents and officers to work in an environment free from fear and favor, in other words uncompromised and not corrupted. Separation of and between the powers of each operative branch is the most basic and fundamental doctrine underscoring our Constitutional Republic. Our system of government is only workable when each branch is able to hold the other branches accountable for actions and usurpations.
The importance of maintaining this equilibrium has been understood to be a core undertaking as our nation keeps focus on accomplishing the mission of our democracy which is, at its basic, concentrating ultimate power in the hands of the people. Although tested throughout our history, at least since 1803 in the landmark Supreme Court case, Marbury v Madison, the approach has survived.
It is our civic responsibility to protect the independence of each branch through informed participation in fair and free elections. As American citizens, we must remain always vigilant of infiltrators with depraved hearts and perverted minds who operate under the cloak of morality and righteousness, and who are diligently encouraged through propagandists and vile hypocrites to destroy American exceptionalism and overthrow the integrity of our political institutions through intimidation, threats and chaos. When corrupted minds are afforded platforms of power, every independent branch of government is disrupted and all become susceptible to defeat. We must not allow the most vocal to silence and suppress the voices of the most faithful.
Editor’s Note: This article begins a three-part series on the three branches of government in more detail and how our system of checks and balances is a fundamental doctrine of our Constitutional Republic system of government.
