Media Deception – Downright Lies

Newsletter | July 21, 2022

Last week we embarked on our multi-part series on the media. As we said, America needs a real press to keep the public informed about important issues, both at home and abroad, that affect our country. Without a clear view of reality, without facts guiding decisions that impact our families, communities and country, we’re at serious risk of losing our freedom.

The Founding Fathers recognized how crucial truthful information is to the proper functioning of a democracy and that’s why the First Amendment to the Constitution guarantees the right to freedom of the speech and the press. The correspondence and public speeches of men like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin show that they weren’t always fond of the press. Indeed, they believed that the media of the day was often dominated by outright lies.

As men who had seen the dark visage of tyranny directly — the Constitution was the fruit of their victory over the British crown — they could imagine a public space in which there were only vile falsehoods. The purpose of the First Amendment is a check against tyranny by ensuring the truth sees the light of day.

In our present day, outright lies infect news reports every night. A multi-year campaign led by prestige press organizations falsely contended that the then-president of the United States was an agent of a hostile power. This same media relentlessly smeared America’s Future Board Chair General Michael Flynn, impugning his reputation with false accusations, all while questioning his patriotism. They lied then and still to this day, continue.

The media’s deception and downright lies pierce at the heart of American’s trust in the media and are dangerous to a free society. Cases in point: A nominee for the Supreme Court was portrayed in the media as a repeat sexual offender; high school boys on a field trip to our nation’s capital were slandered as abusive miscreants assaulting an elderly bystander; men and women who honorably served their country in uniform were falsely accused of participating in racist organizations and dismissed from the military; and hundreds of regular Americans, our family members, friends, and neighbors, exercising their First Amendment rights to freedom of assembly and political protest remain political prisoners and are every day labeled as “insurrectionists” and “domestic terrorists.”

These are all outright lies. It’s enough to drive any patriotic American to the point of madness. How do we counter the ongoing and endless attacks on our reason and sanity? Speak up! The truth won’t tell itself. It needs all of us to speak out on its behalf and raise our voice in one resounding and freedom-loving chorus!

We at America’s Future urge you to join us. Exercising your First Amendment right to free speech has never been more urgent. All of us need to speak out. It’s true what they say — the truth will set you free. To vanquish the outright lies that seem to hover in every dark corner, say the truth.

Thank you for reading our newsletters and responding to our readers’ surveys. Our latest series on the media has struck at the soul of Americans with hundreds of thousands of readers. “Let A Thousand Voices Speak” – That’s The American Way

Americans have lost trust in the media. That’s a fact. Major research companies report the same and now, America’s Future readers weigh in with their responses to last week’s newsletter’s Reader’s Survey about today’s media. And, they didn’t mince words.

Thousands of individuals read the first in a series of articles about “The Betrayal of America – Fake News,” telling us in their survey responses that the media is “pathetic,” “terrifying,” “bias,” “lying by omission” and more…such as “they twist and turn the truth.”

The lack of confidence in the media is at an all-time high and palpable. If those in the media business spouting propaganda and latching onto one-sided narratives think they are getting away with it, they need to think again. Americans are smart. They are paying attention and see right through their lies.

One reader summed up the consensus of opinion with this comment: “I have a Master’s degree in communications. We researched ethics, the effect of media on elections and what we see today on media is not just biased reporting but ‘taking and marketing sides and opinions’…. Not to mention cancel culture, lying by omission, and misrepresenting quotes and facts. Its deceitful, unethical and unacceptable.”

The rise of alternative media has found its footing as well. The majority of our readers seek out at least three outlets for news; many reported turning to five news sources to discern facts from fiction when it comes to issues important to them and their families, and the sources they turn to are not always legacy media outlets.

“Can’t trust the majority of main stream media,” commented one reader. “Learned this most when President Trump started campaigning. It’s pathetic the way they twist and turn the truth. They are the enemy of the people, for sure! I blame a lot of the things that have happened in our country over the last 6 years on the MSM.”

There is no turning back the pages of time, so to speak. Years of wokeness, cancel culture antics, dishonest reporting and outright lies by the press is not sustainable. Americans believe the profession of journalism has collapsed. “Let me see both sides [of a story] and I can judge for myself what is right and wrong for me and my family.”

Information is a two-way street with earned trust between two parties. In the end, as one reader wrote, “The twenty-four-hour news cycle and the need to hype the reader/viewer population is the enemy of thoughtful, deliberate information sharing.”

Without change by a wayward media in this age of information, our country’s future is at risk. So, speak up and call it out. As one reader noted, “Let a thousand voices speak.” That’s the American way.

Please continue to participate in our surveys. The future of America and freedom of our children and grandchildren depends on the actions you take today.

Highlighting Overreach

Under America’s separation-of-powers principles, each branch of our federal government – Executive, Legislative and Judiciary – is vested with only those powers enumerated and specifically conferred to it by our Constitution, otherwise the power is left to the states.

As a refresher: Congress (Legislative Branch) has the power to create and enact law; the President (Executive Branch) has the power to carry out those laws in good faith, and the United States Supreme Court (Judiciary Branch) is vested with ultimate decision-making powers, including to interpret the Constitution; to hear argument and decide cases between parties; to uphold or strike down regulations and laws; to settle disputes between one state and another, and disputes arising between states and the federal government.

The Constitution is clear: only Congress is vested with powers to legislate and only the Judiciary is vested with authority to decide whether a rule of law is constitutional. Executive actions such as “Executive Orders” should not be used as a guise to usurp congressional or judicial authority – this is a hallmark of tyranny – exactly what our Framers went to war against.

However, it appears the simple stroke of a pen results in a President swiftly imposing an agenda through an Executive Order. Since 1994 through to this day, the Federal Register has published exactly 1,000 Executive Orders. The current administration has issued 94 so far.

On July 20, the White House announced its intention to take additional executive actions in light of what they are declaring a “climate emergency.” The fact that the administration declared climate to be an emergency at the moment Congress rejected legislating of the same, undercuts the administration’s reasoning and credibility and is a clear example of pronounced governmental overreach.

In fact, by members own accounts, Congress has been working to create law related to climate for over a year. This underscores the lack of emergency and illustrates an unconstitutional commandeering of legislative powers by the Executive branch.

Decisions out of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1952 through present day highlight attempts at this type of overreach by the Executive branch. From Youngstown v Sawyer (1952) through West Virginia v EPA (2022), the Supreme Court continues to reach the same conclusion: Executive powers are limited, and unnecessary executive orders are unconstitutional.
