| The Immigration Law Critics Don’t Read |
|
A short, ten-page law that most of its critics (including Attorney General Eric Holder) have not even read has dominated the national news for weeks. Signed into law by Governor Jan Brewer, the Arizona Immigration Law requires local police to ask about the immigration status of any person they suspect could be in the country illegally. The law also makes being in the country illegally a crime. Instead of merely deporting illegal aliens and having them return after a few weeks, Arizona can now jail illegals for up to six months with a fine of $2,500. Liberals have inflamed a firestorm of opposition and brought several lawsuits to block the law. President Obama and congressional Democrats plan to draft legislation to override it. There are talks of political boycotts against the state. Major League baseball, under liberal media pressure, may decide against scheduling its next All-Star game in Arizona. In one of the most unfair liberal reactions, the Superintendent of Highland Park, IL High School canceled the district's girls' basketball team's trip to Arizona to participate in a tournament. The reason given: going to Arizona "would not be aligned with our beliefs and values." But Arizonans are not backing down, and polls report that more than 80% of Americans support the Arizona law. A Fox News Opinion Poll revealed that Americans want their own states to pass immigration laws like Arizona’s by a margin of 52% to 31%. In addition, 65% want local authorities to have power to question anyone they suspect is an illegal alien. Persons legally in the country will not be harmed by this new law, because they need only produce a driver’s license or other basic paperwork to remove any doubts. Meanwhile, the law makes it much easier to address the massive problem of illegal aliens. Liberals should blame no one but themselves if they do not like this law. As Sarah Palin pointed out in a speech defending the law, the state of Arizona has been forced to take steps against immigration because the federal government has failed to protect the border. In addition to bringing a flow of drugs from Mexico, illegal aliens have burdened Arizona taxpayers with huge costs for incarceration, education, healthcare, and more. These costs totaled $2.7 billion in 2009. The new law will protect taxpayers from these costs by deterring and deporting illegal immigrants. |
